A discipline of cultural geography, and standing in direct opposition to geographic determinism, possibilism acknowledges the environmental influence over culture; however, possibilists believe that the environmental influence is a small one and the role of human interaction with the environment is the primary force in shaping culture. Environmental determinism, developed in the beginning of the 20th century, was replaced by possibilism and other forms of cultural geography later in the 20th century, as the idea that the physical environment shaped culture fell out of favor.
